Bernie Rede

Head Coach

Bernie Rede is recognized throughout the gymnastics community as one of the top coaches in the country.  With over ten years coaching experience he is truly a master of the sport.   His strength, agility, and keen eye contribute to his most noted trait - his amazing spotting ability! Here at Flagstaff Gymnastics he designed a developmental program for young gymnasts that safely progresses them through the gymnastic levels at an accelerated rate.  We implement this program in our invitational teams known as Hot Shots, All Stars and Pre-Team.  He also put in place the Star Program for all students to achieve success in the sport of gymnastics.  We are honored to have him on our team.

Shawna Smith

I started gymnastics at the age of two in Phoenix and continued training here at Flagstaff Gymnastics Center through Level 8. I am a two time Arizona State Gymnastics Champion; first taking the overall title for Level 5 in all age divisions and then Level 6 for my own age division. I have always loved to spend my summers traveling and have trained at Bela Karolyi’s Gymnastic Camp, PGA’s Camp in Prescott, Extreme’s Mingus Mountain Camp, and Santa Barbara’s Jr. Olympic Camp. While training for gymnastics, I also pursued my love for dance with the Royal Academy of Dance and Tempe Dance Academy. Through Dance Masters of Arizona I was awarded in the teen division 1st Place Tap, 2nd Place Jazz, and 2nd Place Ballet for the State of Arizona. I have danced with the Boston Ballet, the American Ballet Theater, the Malibu Ballet, and the RAD Ballet in Long Beach. In 2005 I was awarded the title of Arizona State Cinderella Teen. Recently, I was one of three in the nation to take the RAD’s prestigious Solo Seal Examination. With all of my accomplishment and training, my greatest love is coaching. It is an honor and a privilege to coach your children.

Lauren Hanafi

Lauren started gymnastics at 3 years old and was a competitive gymnast at Arrowhead Spinetts Gymnastics in Peoria until she was 16. As a junior and senior at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, she was President of the Dance Team and a coach at Arrowhead Spinetts. She graduated high school in 2005 and moved to Flagstaff to attend Northern Arizona University, where earned her Bachelor of Science in Photography and Advertising in 2009. After graduating, she chose to stay in Flagstaff where she loves the town and her gymnasts! Coaching gymnastics is her biggest passion so she is very thankful for the privilege of coaching your children!

Daylee Howard

Gymnastics has been a part of my life for more than 25 years. I started gymnastics in Northern California when I was 3 years old and competed in levels 5 through 10. I competed at the Level 9 Western Championships in 1998 and competed at the Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championships in 1999, 2000, and 2001. I placed 4th on Vault, 10th on Uneven Bars, and 7th All-Around in 2001. I was also the Region 1 Bars Champion in 2001. I earned a full athletic scholarship to Oregon State University where I competed in the NCAA Division 1 National Championships in 2002. After college I moved to Flagstaff with my husband Aaron and started coaching gymnastics. I have coached gymnastics for five years and I love sharing my knowledge and love for the sport. I am safety certified and a USAG Professional Member.

Julie Fix

I was born and raised in Flagstaff, Arizona. I was on the Coconino High School Dance Team, and earned an AAS in Dance and an AA in General Studies from Coconino Community College. I have twirled baton for 13 years and was the Feature Baton Twirler for Northern Arizona University from 2008 to 2011. I am currently still competing in state competitions, and have taken first place in the Grand State Dance Twirl for the past 5 years. As a baton coach, I am Level 1 Coach Certified and Level 1 Judge Certified. I started gymnastics at Firebirds Gymnastics at 6 years old and then moved to Peaks Gymnastics, which was owned by my parents. I moved to Flagstaff Gymnastics where I trained through Level 8. I coached at Bounce and Birthdays for 3 years, and when they shut down in 2009, began coaching at Flagstaff Gymnastics Center. I still keep up with tumbling skills at the gym and am USAG Safety Certified.

Julianna McNeal

Julianna started gymnastics when she was three years old. She began competing here at Flagstaff Gymnastics Center at eleven years old and became interested in coaching when she was fifteen. Shortly after, Co-owner and head coach Shawna Miller noticed how amazing she was with the young Hot Shots while she was taking her own class, and invited her to begin training and coaching with the FGC coaching team. She plans to continue coaching while pursuing a degree in Athletic Training. Julianna enjoys working with all of her gymnasts and watching them improve their skills each day.

Brianna Guthrie

Bri began gymnastics at the age of three. She competed through level five at Olympic Gymnastics in Mesa, AZ. At the age of ten she began competitive cheerleading at AZ Power Elite. Bri went to the Cheerleading Worlds in 2008 with AZ Heat Elite on the Senior 5 International Co-ed team. She was also on the Varsity Cheerleading team at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, AZ. She is now a student at Northern Arizona University, majoring in Marketing and minoring in Psychology. Bri coached preschool and recreational gymnastics at Tumble Town Gymnastics and North Valley Gymnastics in Phoenix, AZ and at Tyler Hill Camp in Tyler Hill, PA. She now coaches preschool, recreational gymnastics, and girls team at Flagstaff Gymnastics Center. She loves working with children and watching the gymnasts grow as athletes each day.

Jack Olsen

I started the sport of gymnastics when I was 6 years old and have continued it for 14 years! I was a competitive Level 10 gymnast at Southwest Gymnastics in Tempe, AZ. I had a successful gymnastics career with a few state champion titles, 8x Regional qualifier, 6x All-Star competitor, and 4x Junior Olympic National competitor. I was fortunate enough to be invited to compete in a special program called Future Stars when I was younger. Luckily I was able to stay close to the sport after my injuries by coaching team and recreational gymnastics. I absolutely love gymnastics and watching gymnasts progress just as much as I loved performing myself. Currently I am studying for a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Northern Arizona University, where I am also involved in the Army ROTC program and the cycling club. I am an avid outdoorsman and have a passion for mountain biking and anything that involves being in the woods.

Kayla Probstfeld

Gymnastics has been a part of my life since I was 3 years old. I was a competitive gymnast for 11 years, and reached Level 9 at Tumbleweeds Gymnastics in Tucson, AZ. My favorite event was Floor and I still love to keep up with my tumbling skills! I have been coaching gymnastics for almost 7 years and have coached boys and girls from tots to Level 7 competitive team. I am currently attending Northern Arizona University to pursue my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I love wakeboarding, snowboarding, dancing, traveling, and eating! Someday I hope to put my own children in gymnastics so they can see how amazing this sport is!
